# Something Is Paying For The Hive (FF 13, Gate-0)

### Nothing is paying for the galaxy. That difference is the first thing this framework makes you check.

It is January, and inside the hive nobody is asleep.

[A cluster of bees](https://mikerandolph211012.substack.com/p/goals-dont-explain-biology-ff-9-objtv) has formed around the queen, and the ones at the center are working. A bee can uncouple her flight muscles from her wings and run them anyway — buzzing without going anywhere — and the muscles give off heat. She burns honey to do it. When she has spent what she can, she works her way out toward the cold shell of the cluster, and a bee from the shell takes her place at the center.

That is a shift change. It runs all winter.

Meanwhile the honey goes down. Somebody put it up last summer for exactly this. If the winter runs long, or the cluster is too small to hold the heat, or the stores are short, the colony does not gradually become a lesser colony. It fails in an order — brood first, then the cluster’s ability to move to fresh stores, then everything.

Watch what else is happening in there. A bee dies inside the hive and another bee carries her out and drops her some distance away. That is a job; some bees do it more than others. A queen fails and the colony raises a new one and continues without pausing. In summer the problem inverts — too hot — and bees stand at the entrance and fan, while other bees fetch water and spread it thin so evaporation pulls the heat off.

For the hive the answer is yes, and you can watch it. Stop the honey and the arithmetic runs out.

Now go somewhere else.

A galaxy has been turning for a span that makes the hive’s whole evolutionary history look like an afternoon. It is vast, it is bound, it has structure — arms, a core, a shape you would recognize in a photograph. It has processes in it that look for all the world like regulation: stars form out of collapsing gas, the big ones burn fast and die violently, and the energy and matter they throw outward heat and disperse the gas that would have made the next stars. Less gas, fewer stars. More gas, more stars. That is feedback, and it is real.

This is the place where the analysis wants to say *self-regulating* and stop.

Nothing is paying.

There is no budget. There is no pool of anything set aside for the galaxy’s continuation, drawn down deliberately, replenished on purpose. No part of it is spending so that the whole persists. When a star exhausts its fuel, nothing is dispatched to replace it — and, more to the point, no specification says it should be replaced. Nothing is being held to a specification. The gas moves where the physics sends it, and the structure is what that motion happens to make. This does not mean such a reservoir could never be found. It means nothing in the astrophysics supplies one.

Feedback is present. Allocation is absent. Those are not the same thing, and the difference is the whole gate.

There is a second way a thing can persist without anyone paying: copies vary, most of them fail, and the survivors carry on. Galaxies are not copies of each other under a filter. Nothing is paying, and nothing is being selected.

The mountain endures. The hive persists — and persisting costs, and the cost has an address, and something inside is paying it.

When you find something that has been around a while and you want to know what it is, ask first: is anything paying?

If the answer is no, stop. You are not looking at what you thought you were looking at.

If the answer is yes, the next question is the interesting one. Who?

Last week I came across this on Marginal Revolution.

The article is by Eli Stark-Elster, AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellow at Smithsonian magazine and a PhD student in evolutionary anthropology at the University of California, Davis.

In numerous PSF analyses I have gotten back some version of this:

Every time I pushed back I got the same result. I did not want to hear it and I heard it every time.

Gough’s Substack drew on Lee Smolin’s proposal that universes reproduce through black holes and evolve by natural selection. Cowen reads more than anyone I know of and passes along almost none of it. This one he passed along. But, it is not my take. Smolin’s universes are copies under a filter, seen from a vantage outside the universe. Mine was a question about something inside this one — my galaxy was supposed to have something in it paying. Different claim, different answer. Mine still comes back no.

The word *gate* is not mine. I never heard it used this way until the LLMs started using it. Ordinary in computer science now, I gather; not in my day. But I had been running gates my whole career before they got named — IF/THEN, back when I first started programming, and later when this project was still trying to define life. Every version had the same shape underneath. The concept was not new. The formal word was new to me. Using it in a formal sense gets me better analysis out of the LLMs. I do not know why.

By September 2025 the term was routine in the sessions, though I had not yet made it my own. One session put a target through the Split Test this way:

*“The Split Test confirms it is a System. It fails Gate-L as its form is not explained by environmental selection of copied variants. It passes Gate-S with clear evidence of a central budget.”*

Either the evidence is there or it is not. The galaxy is the one I lost.

**Grounded.** Winter thermoregulation by uncoupled flight-muscle contraction, rotation of bees between cluster core and mantle, undertaker behavior, queen supersedure, and evaporative cooling by fanning and water collection are standard apiculture and entomology. Stellar feedback regulating star formation is standard astrophysics.

**Deliberately omitted.** Every number. Brood-nest temperature, cluster sizes, winter honey consumption, galactic ages and masses. No source was opened in drafting the essay. A figure would have looked like a receipt and been one only by luck. Nothing here turns on any of them.

**Checked.** The Smithsonian article, its author’s credentials, and Gough’s relationship to Lee Smolin’s proposal were verified against the source during the final pass. An earlier draft of Mike’s Reflection called Gough a physicist. He is not, and the error was mine — it rode along on fluent prose and was caught only when the page was finally opened. I name the error here because that failure is the one this framework claims to catch.

**Inferred, flagged.** That “feedback without allocation” cleanly separates the two cases. A physicist could argue that stellar feedback constitutes regulation in some sense worth defending.

**Pending verification.** Two items, both operator testimony. That the term *gate* reached this project through session output rather than through something read. That formal use of the word yields better analysis — an observation across many sessions, with no comparative test behind it and no explanation offered. Both quotations are verbatim from the project record and were not repaired; the second is trimmed at both ends, and that trimming is disclosed here rather than marked in the text.

**What would overturn the essay.** A demonstration that some galactic-scale process draws on a reservoir maintained for the purpose of preserving a specified structure, with that structure degrading when the reservoir is removed. That is what “paying” means here, and nothing in the astrophysics supplies it.
